I am in a Windows XP network environment, using a Linux
file server. The first time I open a mapped drive, the
explorer window goes blank for about 30 seconds. I
believe this issue was addressed in article 814952 but,
it says you have to have a new version of MUP.SYS. Does
anyone know where I can find this for download? I don't
want to pay $99 for a representative to tell me.

If you call Microsoft support and just ask for the hotfix, you will not be
charged.
