Delay when expanding folders on a domain

My organization has a WinNT4 PDC & BDC but our file
servers are Win2k (fully patched) Server boxes. Different
shares on those servers are mapped to specific drive
letters. When the primary share (drive M is accessed in
Win Explorer, it frequently has long delays before the
listing actually appears onscreen.

The network is using TCP/IP protocol exclusively and the
hardware is 10/100 nics running full duplex in boxes with
512MB RAM running Win XP or Win2K. The server is onsite
with all the PCs in question and is within 150' of any box.
We do have 150 PCs and probably half of them are on the
network share in question at any given time.

The server is a P4 2.0 GHz Dell with 2GB of RAM and a 1Gb
nic.

Any ideas on how to optimize directory listing performance
in our domain?
