I built a new system with a fresh install of Windows XP.
Everything works fine, except that the system will not
respond to certain tasks for about a minute or so. After
that everything is fine. There are only a few programs
installed. Windows XP has been updated with all current
Microsoft patches. Latest hardware drivers are current as
well. Task manager doesn't show anything odd happening
during this delay and there doesn't appear to be any odd
programs executing.
One curious symptom is that I get the "searching
flashlight" if I try to open My Computer during this time.
It's like Windows is searching for a network drive, but
this system isn't currently connected to a network. A
network card is installed, but there have never been any
mapped drives. I disconnected a USB webcam and USB card
reader, but that had no effect.
