Thanks Andrew! I ran defrag from cmd: , the black DOS box appeared with
the file name of defrag.exe, copyright Microsoft, but there was no action.
I ran chckdsk C: /F, which found about 30 file record segments unreadable.
Diskclean, restart, closing all other programs, starting in SAFE MODE,:
nothing seems to allow defrag to run.
I'm open to any other suggestions, and am most grateful for help.
