Defrag analyzes to 50%, then stops.

I've tried defrag in safe mode and normal mode: no difference.

Never can get past 50% analysis.

How to proceed?

Before running defrag one must run diskclean up utility,then try going
to run,type:cmd In cmd typeefrag C: If it completes fine,if not,type:
CHKDSK C: /F Agree to restart,then type:EXIT Restart computer,retry cmd
upon re-entering xp desktop.

Thanks Andrew! I ran defrag from cmd: , the black DOS box appeared with
the file name of defrag.exe, copyright Microsoft, but there was no action.

I ran chckdsk C: /F, which found about 30 file record segments unreadable.
Diskclean, restart, closing all other programs, starting in SAFE MODE,:
nothing seems to allow defrag to run.

I'm open to any other suggestions, and am most grateful for help.
