Defragmenter

I am tring to use the defragmenter on my computer to open
some space. Every time I go into system tools and select
defragmenter it comes up with this message.

MMC cannot create a node manager. Make sure the file
mmcndmgr.dll is registered.

In the past I have been able to use this tool, but the
last few times I get this message. How can I fix this
problem?
