>I am trying to run defrag on my XP home edition computer

and whenever I start it, the computer shutsdown. It is
17% fragmented right now. I have run chkdsk to fix any
errors and I have also cleared out a lot of free space
(20% free) so I can run this. I can tell my laptop is
working hard because the fan never turns off and runs at
high speed even when I'm not using it. I've tried killing
most of the processes and still nothing. I can't run an
antivirus scan either without the computer shutting down.
I don't know how to fix this and my computer desparately
needs to be defraged. I have also tried other defrag
tools with the same bad luck.
