I've had w2000 for several years now and have never got the defragmenter to
work. It just sits there with no disks shown. It should be showing two ntfs
partitions. Any ideas anyone? I've searched the microsoft support site -
can't find anything there. I've also tried it in safe mode - does the same
thing.

Try booting into Safe Mode and defragmenting from there. If it still
doesn't work, try a 3rd party defragmenter.
