My defragment does not finish and keeps going. I tried doing this in safe
mode and never goes past 1%. What's up with this? Any solution? Many thanks
in advance.

have you run error checking against it? (chkdsk)

How much free space on the drive that's being defragmented?

Bob, Yes I did, now that you mentioned. It finds error but says will not fix
them because disk checking was run w/o the /f (fix) parameter. Now, I tried
typing chkdsk/f with no avail. so, what is the correct parameter? Also it
goes on to say : \windows\prefetch\chkdsk.exe-2cc4c59D.pf first allocation
unit is not valid. The entry will be truncated. File and foldr verification
is complete. convert lost chains to files (y/N)? which I said yes.

Allright, I typed chkdsk f:/c and worked. A fraction of a second black screen
came and went. Then I tried the degrag and stops at 1%.

Chris,

Disable your antivirus application because it sounds like its sniffing the
activity which is restarting the defrag program

Ok that's sufficient. I see there is a problem with the drive reported by
chkdsk. What is not clear from your posts is what happened when you invoked
chkdsk.

Before you do a chkdsk make sure you have a full and complete backup of
important data on the drive. If you don't do that first. Problems can
happen during a chkdsk.

Then start a command prompt. Go to start | run. Type in cmd, click ok.

At the command prompt type in chkdsk c: /f. It will give a message that it
can run because it can't lock the drive and asks if you want it to run at
the next boot. Say yes, then reboot. What happens?

Also I recommend you download a drive diagnostic utility from the drive
manufacturer's web site. That will create a bootable floppy for CD. Boot
from that and run the diagnostics on the drive.

Sometimes when you have "lost chains" that means the drive could be
physically failing. You'd best download software from the manufacturer of
your drive and have it check for physical errors.
