when i right-click floppy a: in my computer,
i can click Properties and choose the Tools tab.
the middle option is defragment,
but when i press "defragment now"
i get a window telling me it cannot defragment this type of volume.
so why is this option available in the properties window of the floppy in
the first place?
2- how do i defragment a floppy diskette in windows xp?

defragmenting a floppy is not required
as to why the option appears thats a good question
to which i have no answer

should it bother you just copy the files onto the harddrive from floppy
quick format the floppy and copy them back

they will be defragmented but you will see no gain from it

Good question.

If you need to, simply copy the files off the floppy, fomat it, and copy the
files back. This will make the files contigious.

Fragmentation of files on a floppy would be of little consequence to the
overall performance of the floppy. <g>

1. Properties: That's the standard dialog window for all drives except
Virtual CDs.

2. Fragmentation: Always trust your MVPs: see Harry's post below.
