I just baught a ne 60 gig hard drive , once I hand my data
transfered to the new hdd, I tried to run a defrag. The
computer resets itself. This has happend on several
ocassions. It works well with me getting access to the
data stored on it. I just on't defrag. Please help.

Try running Checkdisk first.... be sure to select Fix errors. It may say it
cannot run, but will schedule it to run the next time the machine reboots.
Choose that option, and then reboot. Defrag may be tripping over a problem
that Checkdisk will fix. You should always run checkdisk before defrag
anyways. It prepares your data for defrag.

Does it reset itself when you click on Defrag? ....or at some point while in
the business of defragging.....

Try defragging in SAFE MODE (hold down F8 when you reboot, then choose that
mode from the list provided)
It should finish without error. Afterwards, shutdown, and reboot.

If it works in Safe Mode, then it might be a driver-related error, since
Safe Mode loads very little in terms of fancy drivers.

I scanned the Microsoft Knowledge Base, but didn't find anything directly
related to the problem you described....

Here's a link on the Command Line version of Defrag (try running it "analyze
only" first.)
