Alright, first the layout - fresh reformat of WindowsXP Professional x32, and
this issue has happened in both a fresh one and one running for four months.

I run Diskkeeper, defrag as best I can, then go to a single manual boot-time
defrag for the MFT, pagefile, and all, and have it run CHKDISK beforehand.

After it does the boot defrag, an odd error starts to happen - I can start
up Messenger, then the rest of the PC will completely hang for a minute or
two, then resume normal operation. Is this a problem caused by defragging the
MFT? Or will removing the pagefile fix it? Or is it hardware, and do I need
to replace my disk drive?

could be anything,

a simple way
to get a quick analysis is
to see if the o.s. responds
better in safemode and
safemode w/networking.

safemode w/networking
allows for an internet connection

I experience a similar problem. I am running an Acer laptop. Apparently,
there is something in the power management hardware or firmware that causes
the freeze-up. I have found that if I run my laptop from the wall plug
without the battery, it does not freeze up.

Well, I found the source of the problem. ZoneAlarmPro's "vsmon.exe" would
lock up the CPU after an MFT defragment. Changed firewalls and all's better.
