I am trying to defrag my c: partition (10 Gb out of 80).
I got a little lax, and now my drive will not defrag very
well at all. I have many files that are fragmented, and
will not get put back together. In addition, and what
really troubles me is that the report telss me that the
files that cannot be defragmented are all located in:
"50 457 KB \Documents and
Settings\my name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\7MKJ7DWH\completed[1].html"
However, I cleaned my disk and got rid of all temp
internet files. When I go to "\Documents and Settings\my
name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files" there is no
folder labeled Content.IE5, and a search brings up none
of the supposedly fragmented files. What gives? And how
can I get the defrag to work at this point? I have run
it about 10 times and it does not get any better. My
report looks like this:
Volume (C
Volume size = 9.77 GB
Cluster size = 4 KB
Used space = 7.18 GB
Free space = 2.59 GB
Percent free space = 26 %

Volume fragmentation
Total fragmentation = 17 %
File fragmentation = 34 %
Free space fragmentation = 0 %

File fragmentation
Total files = 69,027
Average file size = 286 KB
Total fragmented files = 50
Total excess fragments = 1,492
Average fragments per file = 1.02

Pagefile fragmentation
Pagefile size = 0 bytes
Total fragments = 0

Folder fragmentation
Total folders = 2,341
Fragmented folders = 1
Excess folder fragments = 0

Master File Table (MFT) fragmentation
Total MFT size = 164 MB
MFT record count = 71,575
Percent MFT in use = 42 %
Total MFT fragments = 3

I tried to put all the pagefile in my second hardrive,
but that did not help.

TIA,
John

ps - to send directly to me remove the .nospam from my
address

Bobby;

Run Error Checking first, reboot and then run defrag.
----------

Scandisk is now Error-checking (chkdisk).
Open My Computer, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
Right click your hard drive | Properties.
On the Tools tab, under Error-checking, click Check Now.
Under Check disk options |
Check both.
Automatically fix file system errors
[[Specifies whether Windows repairs file-system errors found during disk
checking. All files must be closed for this program to run. If the drive is
currently in use, a message asks if you want to reschedule the disk checking
for the next time you restart your computer. Your drive is not available to
run other tasks while the disk is being checked.]]
Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
[[Specifies whether Windows repairs file-system errors found during disk
checking, locates bad sectors, and recovers readable information. All files
must be closed for this program to run. If the drive is currently in use, a
message asks if you want to reschedule the disk checking for the next time
you restart your computer. Your drive is not available to run other tasks
while the disk is being checked.
If you select this option, you do not need to select Automatically fix file
system errors. Windows fixes any errors on the disk.]]

You have to reboot for Error-checking to run.

For a peek at the log.
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | OK
Look in Application | Listed as Information
under Winlogon, Event 1001

Hope this helps. Let us know.

Bobby Cutsinger <(E-Mail Removed)> hunted and pecked:
