Have you tried leaving it overnight?
also, make sure you have exited all unneccessary programs.
I have personally found that disabling the screen saver and
power saving modes helps. How much free space do you have
on the targetted drive?

What you are experiencing is relatively "normal". This is
caused by excess drivers being loaded that interfere with
the defrag program.

To solve your problem, run defrag from the "SAFE MODE".
You can enter "SAFE MODE" by

1. Shutting your computer down completely and then turning
it back on.
2. As soon as you see the screen, start pressing the F-8
key repeatedly. Such as; F-8 F-8 F-8 F-8, keep doing this
until the startup menu appears.
3. Once SAFE MODE comes up, as screen will show up stating
your computer was started in "SAFE MODE". Click okay.
4. Run defrag just like you did previously in Windows.

When you are all done, simply click start and reboot the
computer. It will reboot normally.
