Defrag will not run to completion

Windows ME, 1gig processor, lots of memory. I Defrag every few weeks

About half way through it gave a quick message I could not read
before the screen went black. I re booted several times ok. I tried to
run Defrag again several times it would stopped and shut down the
system automatically and restarted. It went through scan disc OK. Each
time Defrag started but would not complete.

Things are running fine now but I have not been able to complete
Defrag???
