I have followed advice of other postings, but cannot find any trace of
defrag to be able to re-install from control panel.... add/delete programmes
.. When I try to access defrag I get the message
Windows cannot open this file
File dfrg.msc
Then it asks what I want to use to open the file.
Would appreciate any help on this. Thanks

Hi

What happens if the type dfrg.msc from Start>Run? If the Defrag program
doesn't appear, you can extract a fresh copy from the XP CD. Put the XP CD
into the cd drive and type the following from Start>Run

expand X:\i386\dfrg.ms_ %systemroot%\system32\dfrg.msc

where X is the cd drive letter.

Hi Will,
Still no joy......When I typed dfrg.msc from Start>Run I had the same
message that Windows cannot open this file ...msc
When I put the cd in and typed the details you suggested in the Start>Run I
had a flash of a smaller black screen. This was happening before also when
trying to access defrag. I noticed that someone else had posted that they
were getting this also..
Do you have any other ideas ?
Many thanks for your interest.

Hi

Using the CD to extract a fresh copy of the Defrag program shouldn't cause
that to happen, unless you have an underlying problem. Are you getting any
error messages at all? If not, have a look in the Event Viewer for any
possible pointers towards the problem.

dfrg.msc is is a Microsoft Common Console Document.
It runs inside Microsoft Management Console -
typically - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mmc.exe

Maybe the actual problem is with mmc.exe?

Pardon me for jumping in - I have the same problem but unfortunately I have
no idea where my XP CD is. Is it possible to extract Defrag from the CABs?

OOPs - I may have posted this in error - my problem is defrag locks up at
about 25%. Should I reinstall defrag?

It looks like defrag may have been unregestered by another app <like
Diskkeeper, etc..>. If so, uninstall, reinstall, and once again
uninstall the application. This should clear any improper installation
or uninstalls.

If this doesn't help try this. <strongly recommend you read this>
Follow Microsoft's Description for editing and backing up your
registry. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256986 or Q256986.

Start Notepad.exe, and then copy the following text into a blank text
file:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{44EC053A-400F-11D0-9DCD-00A0C90391D3}]
@="Registrar Class"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{44EC053A-400F-11D0-9DCD-00A0C90391D3}\InprocServer32]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\atl.dll"
"ThreadingModel"="Both"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{44EC053A-400F-11D0-9DCD-00A0C90391D3}\ProgID]
@="ATL.Registrar"

On the File menu, click Save As, and then click All Files in the Save
as type box. Name the file Fixalt.reg, and then save the file to the
desktop on your computer. You can double-click the Fixalt.reg file to
merge the information into the registry of the non-functional computer.

Start Notepad.exe, and then copy the following text into a blank text
file:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC\NodeTypes\{476e644a-aaff-11d0-b944-00c04fd8d5b0}]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC\NodeTypes\{476e644a-aaff-11d0-b944-00c04fd8d5b0}\Extensions]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC\NodeTypes\{476e644a-aaff-11d0-b944-00c04fd8d5b0}\Extensions\ContextMenu]
"{43668E21-2636-11D1-A1CE-0080C88593A5}"="DfrgSnapin"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC\NodeTypes\{476e644a-aaff-11d0-b944-00c04fd8d5b0}\Extensions\NameSpace]
"{8EAD3A12-B2C1-11d0-83AA-00A0C92C9D5D}"="Disk Management Extension"
"{43668E21-2636-11D1-A1CE-0080C88593A5}"="DfrgSnapin"
"{243E20B0-48ED-11D2-97DA-00A024D77700}"="Removable Storage Extension"

On the File menu, click Save As, and then click All Files in the Save
as type box.Name the file Fixdefr1.reg, and then save the file to the
desktop on your computer. You can double-click the Fixdefr1.reg file to
merge the information into the registry of the non-functional computer.

Start Notepad.exe, and then copy the following text into a blank text
file:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{43668E21-2636-11D1-A1CE-0080C88593A5}]
@="DfrgSnapin Class"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{43668E21-2636-11D1-A1CE-0080C88593A5}\InprocServer32]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\dfrgsnap.dll"
"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{43668E21-2636-11D1-A1CE-0080C88593A5}\ProgID]
@="DfrgSnapin.DfrgSnapin.1"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{43668E21-2636-11D1-A1CE-0080C88593A5}\TypeLib]

@="DfrgSnapin.DfrgSnapin"

On the File menu, click Save As, and then click All Files in the Save
as type box. Name the file Fixdefr2.reg, and then save the file to the
desktop on your computer. You can double-click the Fixdefr2.reg file to
merge the information into the registry of the non-functional computer.

Finally you need to register the snapin back into your machine.

Open the Command Prompt;
Click Start, run, under open type "cmd"

Type "CD \WINDOWS\system32" and press Enter.
Type "Regsvr32.exe DfrgSnap.dll" and press Enter.
Type "Regsvr32.exe dfrgsnap.dll" and press Enter.

A window will appear confirming the success of the registration;
select OK.
exit the command prompt and try defrag again...
good luck!~
