Brand new build, Windows XP 64 bit, less than a week old. I just finished
installing the first trunkload of Windows updates and was in the process of
installing Service Pack 2 when I happened to notice that my defrag had
disappeared. I know it was there because I ran it once earlier this week.

Now what?

Ok I was able to create a working shortcut to the gui on the desktop, and I
was able to run defrag.exe from the CMD prompt.

I would just like to know how it is possible for it to have disappeared from
the program files and can I get it back in there? Has anyone else had this
problem?

It shouldn't be necessary to be trying to find workarounds to a standard
application on a new build.

Create a shortcut to launch %SystemRoot%\system32\dfrg.msc in this folder.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\System Tools

Good luck
