I get these errors when I try to defragment a drive that
contains any kind of Backup:

The external E:\ Drive then vanishes from the Disk
Management page and the My Computer section, but
reappears after a complete shutdown and reboot. The
errors occur when I try to degragment the volume again as
suggested by the XP Pro Defragmentation Utility once I
analyze the drive.

Any ideas?

Other questions:

Should you and can you defrag a backup (A Norton Ghost
image or an Acronis True Image, or a standard XP backup
Utility backup?

Should you have the volume you are backing up to be
monitored by System Restore?

Thanks,
Ron

I was able to Optimize the problem HDD using Norton Speed
Disk, with getting the $BITMAP & $Mft errors and
associated timeouts. Not sure if this solves the problem
but both my HDDs are performing fine now. The standard
Windows Defrag Utility never would work withour error on
the problem HDD.
