Hi there,

I do a defrag of my machine and actually did it more than a couple of times
and when it "completes" it shows as still being 5% fragmented (10% file
fragmentation).

On this machine it won't go to 0% like it should..

Any ideas on what's causing this to jam up?

Thanks,

Gordon

"like it should"..
What makes you think it should?

Things you should know about the Windows XP Disk Defragmenter:

- Disk Defragmenter MMC is based on the full retail version of Executive
Software Diskeeper.
- The version that is included with Windows XP and later provides limited
functionality in maintaining disk performance by defragmenting volumes that
use the FAT, FAT32, or NTFS file system.

I never "expect" the disk defragmenter in Windows to get the drive 100%
defragmented. It sometimes does, but since it is a limited version of a
FULL product - I expect it not to be able to do things that it's
full-fledged money-grubbing cousin can. =)

Some things, like the MFT, are not defragmented by the included defrag
utility. To achieve 100%, you may have to use a third party product. It's
not like it's critical or anything, you really don't need to worry about it.
Fragmentation in small amounts has a neglible effect on preformance.

You may never get 100% defrag for Windows defrag. Nothing is jamming up, and
nothing is wrong with it either. Try empting all your temp folders, the
windows temp, all your user temps, even your internet temp folders. Reboot
into safe mode and try the defrag again, may not still 100% defrag'n, but
you may get a better result. If you don't, there's still nothing wrong, well
with your computer anyway.
