I have not deleted files or directories, but have red X's. When I browse I
find the exact path names and yet Movie Maker says they are not a close
enough match. As far as I can see, they can't get any closer because they are
the original files in the original place. Is my computer possesed?

A problem that I have just encountered.
I have been trying to put together a video with my own music and for some
reason the last load of film copied to the system has suddenly become red Xed.
Personally after innumerable crashes I am now tiring of the program as it
seems to be full of bugs and forever locking up! (screen freezing). I am
running Windows Media edition on a pentium D 3.0 GHz Dual processor so it
cant be lack of processing power.

I don't have a solution, but have a similar problem with completed movie
projects that are saved. revisiting the project later finds Red X'x where
clips used to be. Have you found an answer? PapaJohn helped me recover data
several weeks ago, so apparently it can be done. But I haven't been able to
reach him.

PapaJohn left for a 4 week vacation on
Aug. 24th. I suspect his posting in this
newsgroup will be suspended or severely
limited until his return.

Your Movie Maker .mswmm project file
does not contain the source files...they
still reside in their original location unless
you have moved or deleted them.

Right clicking the red x should give you
an opportunity to browse for the files.
