I would just like to say that Defender is working well, i have experienced
none of the problems other people are having, and i have had it on my
computer since the very first day it was released. It updates and scans well,
although i thought it wasn't scanning properly a few weeks ago, however it
was just a lack of understanding on my behalf of how it operates. I have
never found any virus/spyware/trojans etc on my computer except for MRU's
with Adaware.

I recently intalled Defender on my wifes parents computer as they were
having problems with porn popping up on there screen. A scan with Defender
identified 788 peices of crap, it removed all except 25 items, which i later
removed successfully in safemode. I later scanned with Spybot S&D which found
13 bad items, however these were found by Defender, but were returning
somehow, additionally a scan with Ad-aware found 155 other bad items (no MRU
or cookies included), all were registry entries, except 1 VX2
(abetterinternet) that also was found with Defender and Spybot but kept on
returning. A scan with Kaspersky and Bitdefender removed the 4 trojans that
where probably bringing that back. Nothing has returned since. Mind you their
security only consisted of Norton Antivirus 2005, which was completly
disabled by something on the computer. If i had it my way, a reformat would
have been the best solution however they wouldnt let me do that...some people
have no clue! I have since intalled ZA Pro, G Data Antivirus kit
(Kaspersky&Bitdefender), Spybot, Adaware, Spyblaster and MVPS Hosts file to
try stop these things coming back and getting out. I didnt keep Defender on
their computer as they dont understand english (they speak german)...i will
wait until the German version is released then they will understand the
warning messages. Does anyone know when that will be ready??

Anway that was my story.
Thanks for reading.

I don't have any idea when the localized versions will be available--I don't
think they are rumor--I believe that German and Japanese are publicly
announced--but no timeline.
These are beta versions, though--so they'll come before the release, which I
expect to be some time in the latter half of this year.

That's a good story--it is important to note that using safe mode, and
scanning with updated antivirus tools as well as antispyware--can be crucial
to getting a machine clean.

I'm somewhat skeptical of Windows Defender's ability to clean some current
infections--so I'd recommend checking carefully on that machine--the
simplest check I know is just to open a browser window to some reasonably
reputable home page and let it sit--you shouldn't get any popups..

It's always good to have more than one program to scan for spyware and adware.
I use Defender and Ad-aware....and once in awhile I scan with other (mostly
online) programs.

I still have a few minor problems........I installed Defender yesterday and
it found spyware which can not be removed (see my post "Error: 0x80501001").
Also...every time I boot up my computer, I scan with Ad-aware and it always
finds the same 2 tracing cookies. Even though I remove them they will be back
when I reboot.

Windows Defender doesn't touch cookies.
I think I probably answered the other post--that one is in the System
REstore area--which can be cleared most safely by going to start, all
programs, accessories, system tools, disk cleanup, wait through the initial
process, then click the other tab--"more options?"--and find the System
Restore button--that will remove all but the most recent restore point.
