Windows Defender doesn't upgrade the signatures.
I tried the msiexec /x AS_Sigs.MSI fix (KB915105) which does install the
signatures, but as soon as I click the Check for Updates button, Defender
connects to the Internet and returns after about 10 seconds with the message
"Windows Defender found no new definitions or engine updates available".
The status window of Defender still shows the signature version 1.0.0.0
(25-1-2006)
No errors in the syslog, so I don't know what's going wrong...
Thanks in advance for your help!

I've also encountered this same error on a XP Professional SP2 set-up plus
can't get rid of the "updates are ready for your computer" message

I'm reporting the same problem with the "updates are ready for your computer"
which reappears after installing the signature update, no matter how many
times you allow it to be installed. I finally checked the box to prevent
further reminders about the update. This doesn't really solve the problem,
but at least stops the update reminder.

I had the same problem. If you go to Microsoft Update there is a high
priority update with the newest signatures. Seemed to download and install
just fine

Are you on a managed network with SUS distributing updates?

Can you go to WindowsUpdate?

If you are getting looping updates--you have a different issue.

I'd apply the fix that the previous poster noted--the line with msiexec in
it--read that KB article.

Once you've done that, either do Help, about--check for updates, or
WindowsUpdate or both. See if you can get the UI at the bottom of the main
page to read .16 at the end.--you may need to exit and reenter after an
update to see this change.

See my reply to the adjacent message--kb 915105 should help you with this
issue.
