AutoUpdate--the native automatic update mode of Windows Defender uses the
BITS service. This service is specifically designed, to minimize bandwidth
impact.

The right strategy for a dialup user is just to ignore the update
process--let the bits service do its thing--dial in when you want, hang up
when you want. Bits should use unused bandwidth when it can, resume, etc,
until it gets the file in.

If your windows update is pointing to your local WSUS, then you must include
the Windows Defender in synchronization setting.
In Products selection, please include Windows Defender
In Update classifications, please include Definition Updates

You must synchronize the server and approve the definition for clients to
get the latest definition.

Here's how to enable BITS

I quote Stu--a regular contributor here:

Start/Run
Type "services.msc"
Click "OK"

Please check the following are stªrted:

1.Automatic Updªtes
2.Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
3.Cryptographic Services
4.Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
5.System Restore Service

To verify that BITS is correctly configured :

1. Double-click `Background Intelligent Transfer Service.`
2. In the Startup type box, click Manual, and then Apply.
3. Click the `Log On` tab, and then verify that the service is enabled in
every hardware profile that you have listed. If the service is disabled in
one or more hardware profiles, click the hardware profile, Enable, and then
Apply.
4. Click the General tab and then Start.

If BITS starts successfully, visit the Windows Update Web site or the
Microsoft Update Web site to see if you can obtain updates. If it works OK,
change (2.) to automatic.

thanks Engel,it help me a lot.i've check those settings,all of them are
running normally,and it is very strange that now on microsoft update install
history it said 'the software KB915597 you've installed successful
yesterday.'BUT my in my Defender,it shows"Definition Version is 1.14.1639.16
which updated on 30-07-06".ha ha,may be KB915597 is not so important? Anyway
