Have just asked Defender to check for updates, using the Help menu. It
played a sound but nothing else happened. Also played the same "flat ping"
when I exited the application.

Does anyone know what this means , please?

The update function within defender is supposed to popup a balloon in the
notification area and sound an alert ping. The balloon first says WD is
checking for updates, and for instance if none are found, a second balloon
pops along with a second alert ping saying WD found no updates. Is it
possible you have balloon notifications turned off on your system?

I'm very grateful Dave - this was indeed the case. Have re-enabled the
balloon notifications via tweakui. It makes sense now!
