Defender not scanning automatically

WD has stopped scanning automatically, even though it's set to scan daily at
19.00.

It was fine until about a week ago. Now get a message every three days
recommending me to do a scan. I haven't installed any new software or made
changes to my pc.

You are very unlucky. I get one every ten now and then - usually when I`ve
meddled with my system. That said, have you established the scheduler process
is still enabled? You can do this thru Control Panel>Performance and
Maintenance>Scheduled Tasks>View Tasks>then check mark>View hidden Tasks.
There you should see MP Scheduled scan ... ? If not, try recycling thru the
WD UI.

Do you have your comp turned off during the scheduled scan time?

I've just checked, and the scan is still Scheduled. It's still set for auto
scanning in the WD UI too. I changed the time to test it - it should be
running now, but isn't.

Any further advice?

Hello Philwil,

Scheduled scans are done via the Windows Scheduled tasks facility.
Go to Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Scheduled tasks.

In the menu at the top, choose Advanced, View hidden tasks and Notify me of
missed tasks.

You should see an entry for MP Scheduled Scan.

If you right click this entry, and choose to RUN it--what happens?

Scheduled scans are done via the Windows Scheduled Tasks service. So--check
that Task Scheduler is started and set to automatic.

On XP, the job is a hidden task.

When I click Run, WD performs a scan.

How do I check that Task Scheduler is started and set to automatic?

From your desktop right click My Computer and select Manage. This will open
Computer Management>under Services and Applications >Select services and
scroll down until you see Task Scheduler (Extended view tab). Status should
be Started and Automatic. If not then right click the entry where you can
make the necessary changes.

Sorted.

Thanks for your help. In the end I ran a Registry scan and fix, and since
then WD's run fine.

Cheers.
