First off, I may have too many coats of armor. I run AVG antivirus and
Defender silmultaneously and run Ad-Aware spybot scans often. I used to use
CCleaner every so often but jsut switched to AdvancedSystemCareFree recently
because of how popular it seemed on Cnet for free downloads. Since
downloading the ASCF, (which seems to run great, lots of features, many more
levels of protection than Ccleaner), Windows Defender doesn't open on a
restart, and the brick wall icon on the task bar always has a yellow
exlamation point over it. I've removed and reinstalled Defender to no avail.
It sure seems like I don't need all of these, but I seem to be overcautious
from previous issues.

please advise,

Mike

Yes, you have too many things going on at once.

AVG, in their most recent version, intentionally disables Windows
Defender--at Microsoft's advice. Microsoft advises that only one
application do real-time monitoring.

You can open Windows Defender, go to tools, options, scroll all the way to
the bottom using the scroll bar, and uncheck the checkbox to "use Windows
Defender."

AVG should be able to manage this without your having to do this, and
without the icon showing that way, but for some reason this didn't happen on
your system.

I'm having the same problem. I wonder if it's caused by the Microsoft updates
of 11/10. Did it start at that time for you? I also use AVG.

Keith.

same here, also use AVG - does this mean that Window Defender is no longer
needed and AVG is doing it's job?
