For about a week and a half the security center has been placing an alert
icon in my task bar telling me Defender is not turned on. It is on.When I
open the program it tells me it's running normally. I am running Vista on a
Toshiba Satellite A105, McAfee for virus, and Crap Cleaner on demand. I am
still learning the OS. My last one was Millenium. I have only had this
computer for 5 or 6 months. This is driving me a little nuts.

Hello seeker05,

I'm not sure about this--but it looks promising--

Good luck

PS
Are you running Windows Live OneCare?
Firewall ?

Seeker;
If your not running OneCare, maybe the easiest thing to try as a solution
would be to take a look here for information about a potential WMI
repository inconsistency:

On Vista this is a relatively easy fix if in fact your WMI database is
broken, so at least give the verifyrepository command a shot.

Another caution, although having no bearing on your current problem, is to
make sure you don't use CCleaner to clean Applications > Utilities >
Windows Defender (uncheck it) because doing so will cause Defender to loose
track of it's scan history, and report that you haven't scanned your system
recently.
