When I try to install Defender on my home computer which uses Windows XP, I
get this error message...

MSI (s) (00:E4) [17:32:26:353]: Product: Windows Defender -- Error 1719. The
Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are
running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly
installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.

I'm not in safe mode and I have the latest Windows service pack and other
programs install with no problem. Why won't this one? Help!

Is this repeatable--i.e. have you retried the operation with the same
result?

Same problem here. Can't install Defender. Happens EVERY time I try. Windows
XP Medie Center Edition. They have been infected with something which may be
causing the problem.

Update, it appears to install most of the way. The error show up right at the
end when it tries to start the Windowsdefender service. Since it can't start
the service, it makes you cancel out of the install altogether.

For those that care, I finally was able to get Defender to install. I ran a
scan of the computer using the free online safety scanner at
http://safety.live.com and let it remove all of the trojans and other viruses
it found. After it was done, I rebooted and wouldn't you know, Defender would
then install.
