When trying to install Defender on XP Pro SP2, the install fails after
clicking on "Validate". I've run the diag tool it validates XP as being OK.
I've also installed the latest version of MS Installer.

Can anyone offer suggestions/fixes? Thanks

This will probably not be your solution but it is easy and can't hurt to try.

Test this diagnose test, connection to MS, that scripts working and more.
<http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/>
-

Also try a free prog. called "dial-a-fix", will sort out your download prob,
installations .and some others if you need,.....

Go ahead and download Dial-a-fix.

http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Reboot into safe mºde (F-8)

Click the green checkmark and click Go.

After it has finished,

Reboot

Can you go to Windows Update, select Express (Get high-priority updates),
and apply all offered updates

Let us know what happens.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try them and post the results. Thanks again.

I'm not sure what diag tool you are talking about. Engel's first reference
is what I would recommend first--if you pass that, I'd expect that you would
get an error message of some sort as part of the install procedure. Please
download the file, save it to disk, and run it from your machine--rather
than running it directly.

Did you really try dial-a-fix? (don't worry--I don't think it is relevant
to your issue--so don't do it if you haven;t already.

Here's what I would like you to try:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803/

This is a slightly updated version of the Installer--I'm not sure it will
be a fix, but it is what I would try first.

What are the chances of your being infected with malware? What prompted
this install of Windows Defender?

Unregister Windows Installer, and then reregister Windows Installer.

To do this, follow these steps:

1. On the "Start" menu, click "Run:.

2. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /unreg", and then press ENTER.

3. On the "Start" menu, click "Run".

4. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /regserver", and then press ENTER.

Please let us know the result

I've seen a handful of users that need to disable real-time protection by
their antivirus application in order to get the program installed. (Stop all
programs that are open in the bottom taskbar) etc. etc.. This may be worth
trying in your cªse.
