When I boot up I get the message that windows defender fails to initialize -
this is right after installing the latest defender update.

Which update number is that so I can remove it - if THAT IS the problem?

The Beta version of Defender expired today. You need to uninstall it and
install the latest version. Also there are Windows Defender newsgroups were
you should be posting Defender questions.

Now the update requires the windows validation program -which I do NOT wish
top install.

Any way around this?

Post to a Defender newsgroup. You could get a valid copy of XP, too.

I HAVE all valid programs installed so the 'validation' would not fail.

I just do like the 'other' things the validation program does!

I'll check further in the WD ng.

No. You MUST Validate to be able to install Defender, IE7 and a host of
other things from MS.

Note that Validating is related to but not the same as the WGA Notifications
tool.
