Hello all, I'm testing the beta2 of WinDefender
and whenever I try to run a scan on a machine
I receive the following error:

<========================================>
Windows Defender scan has encountered an error and terminated.
Scan ID: {3DFBC5A5-9DB4-44B5-9410-58465D891355}
Scan Type: AntiSpyware
Scan Parameters: Quick Scan
User: DOMAIN\User
Error Code: 0x8050800c
Error description: An unexpected problem occurred. Install any available
updates, and then try to start the program again. (To check for updates,
click Start, click All Programs, and then click Windows Update.)

<========================================>

notice that the machine is "clean as a baby" and that
defender has the latest update, the same error occurs
when defender starts a scheduled scan

the system is running windows 2000, SP4, full hotfixed
also, I had no problems with the previous MSAS

I'm also getting these errors.
I let the scheduled scan run several days,
I removed Defender and re-downloaded and reinstalled.
Still getting the same error.

Is somebody at MS going to fix this?
Or just ignore the problem until it goes away by itself?

Solved

uninstall and reinstall defender, when the setup
asks to "update the definition and run a scan"
deny it (uncheck the option), next fire up the GUI
of Defender and click the "down arrow" next to
the "scan" button, select "custom scan" and then
"scan selected drives and folders", click the
"select" button and check your disk(s)

that's all, now perform an update and then scan
your system and defender won't crash (or at least
it didn't crash here)

HTH

Afraid not...

I did exactly as you suggested:
Uninstalled
Re-installed
Deferred update
Ran custom scan (C-drive only) it puked...

Then I had it grab the new sigs.
ran a quick scan - It puked

I'm afraid for now this program is not making it past my test machine.
I won't install it anywhere else until they get it fixed.

Thanks for the tips though.

I don't think that's sure-fire. I do think there was a message from a
[MSFT] name here stating that they were aware of this one and working on
it--but I may be confusing this with some other scan-completion issue.

Y/W, sorry it didn't work for you, at any rate
I went to "custom scan", selected the drives
and DID *NOT* run the scan at that time, I
just went back to the main page, then I asked
Defender to seek for updates and once the
updates were installed, I just clicked "scan"
on the main page

hope it's clear now

On all machines where I installed Defender and got this error code
everything turned out OK once Defender performed its first scheduled scan.

I had same Error.
Thinkpad T41p Windows XP Pro SP2 /w Symantec Client Secuirty 3.0, Windows Servcer 2003 Domain Client,
Microsoft Anti Spyware Beta installed.

I uninstalled Anti Spyware beta,
then install Windows Defender,
1st scan I got error 0x8050800c.

then, try to find windows defender update, but already updateded.
so, I uninstall and use Ccleaner, then install again.

same error at same timing.

uninstall again, and use windows installer cleaner to delete Windows defender data.
check Thinkpad update.
install thinkpad client security.
then install windows fedender again, but choose no update and no spynet.
then quick scan, I got same Error.
then try to update Windows defender to feb, 23rd (1.13.1282.6 ) signiture.
after update complete, I try to quick scan again.

finally I completed scan without error.
