Has anyone encountered this message when their Symantec antivirus is
scanning? It began appearing once I downloaded Defender. Never had this
problem with the regular Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1 (little Bullseye icon).
SYMANTEC TAMPER PROTECTION ALERT

Target:
Event Info: Open Process
Action Taken: Blocked
Actor Process: C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exe (PID 1036)
Time: Wednesday, February 22, 2006 7:55:12 PM

This has been reported a number of times. The alert may be triggered either
by the scanner--mpcmdrun, or the real-time protection service--msmpeng

I don't have any workaround except ignoring the alerts, turning off that
optional portion of Symantec Antivirus, or uninstalling Windows Defender.

Bill: I tried that, thinking I could reinstall Beta 1. Doesn't appear that
it is available any longer. I am set up to receive Auto updates, but being
curious, downloaded Defender without notification. Bad idea, in retrospect.
Should have kept Beta 1 until "officially" notified. Perhaps this bug would
have been worked out. Do you know of anyway to get Beta 1 back? Thanks,,,LE

If you go to www.filehippo.com and search on Microsoft Antispyware--they
keep the old builds available. Be sure to download .701. I installed via
that route today, on a VPC, just to have an install to answer questions.

Thanks Bill. I will give it a shot and let you know the results. Will also
uninstall Defender.

Bill: By downloading .701, will the Windows Auto Updates to Antispyware
still work (i.e, definition updates, etc). Wasn't sure if the Windows Auto
Update would recognize the downloaded "old" Beta 1.
Thank you,
LE

The update mechanism in the old program was completely separate from Windows
Update. It should still work as well as it ever did--I've verified this on
a Windows 2000 install--I had Microsoft Antispyware, installed WIndows
Defender, updated, scanned, then uninstalled Windows Defender and reinstall
Microsoft Antispyware, and updated it. It all worked.
