When I try to open defender, I get a message saying that it's been turned
off. Why? What can I do to correct this? I've deleted my old version and
downloaded the newest version already, but that didn't help.

Usually this is because you are running an antimalware product or suite
which provides the functionality of Windows Defender. Recent versions of
some AVG, McAfee, Symantec/Norton products, and Microsoft Security
Essentials will all have this effect.

Hi Bill,

Trend Micro with anti spyware does this since the beginning of Windows
Defender!
I use Defender for a scan some times and then just start Defender from
the Configuration window, after click on Defender i click on Start
Defender and Defender gets his update and i can scan after that i stop
the Windows Defender Service in Services and disable it again.
This in Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit, but i did this also in XP and Vista
the same way!

Kind Regards and all the best in 2010,

I'm running Windows with xp2. I have Avg Free anti-virus, Spyware blaster,
and Pavark antirookit. Does that help? I'm kinda new at this.

AVG's recent products will turn off Windows Defender--this is
expected--nothing to worry about.

I get the exact same problem running Windows 7 Home Premium Edition with
Windows Defender v6.1.7600.16385.

Each time I start Windows, Windows Defender has stopped running. I also run
Ad-Aware Free edition, Spy-bot and AVG Free edition.

The thing that really enoys me is that when running, the Windows Defender
icon is no longer displayed in the Windows System Tray. Therefore it is not
immediately obvious that Defender has stopped.

There used to be a check box in Windows Defender to display icon in system
tray. It seems to have been removed.

Anyone any thoughts?

Thanks.

Have you read the other messages in the thread to which you replied?

AVG turns off Windows Defender in its most recent version.

Hello CB,

Did you notice the slider button for scrolling the window at the right
side of your Defender Options Window? Scroll down.

Under Real-time protection options, the las two radio buttons
-=-

Go here: Microsoft Malware Protection Center
<http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/default.aspx>

Save it, close all windows/progяams open, and run as admin.

Click the link in the right frame under ' Latest Definition Updates '
for either the x86 [32 bit] or x64 [64 bit] edition of Windows installed.
*Save* the definitions that will now download.

Once the download completes close all open programs and browseяs.

Now run the downloaded file [ if the edition of Windows is Vista, then
*яight* click it and choose 'Run as administrator'.
Follow the prompts to allow it to run ].

See if that both brings you up to date, and perhaps improves on the behavior
in future.

I have similar problems with Defender
I'm running Vista Home Premium with SP2 and AVG Free 9.0.725 updated daily
on a CompakCQ60 laptop. No other antispy or security except Windows Firewall.
Problems only started 2/3 months ago when I noticed Defender was not always
starting, and if it did it turns off almost immediately without notifying me.
I can turn it on again and it will then stay operational until I shutdown.
I tried the manual update which installed todays definitions OK but after
shutting down and restarting Defender had failed to start at all.
