I know this is frustrating. Windows Defender updates via autoupdate.
automatically, or manually, via Windows Update.
So--the probable solution for you is to again go to Windows Update, do an
express scan, and apply all offered updates. This will include Windows
Defender definitions, and, additionally, perhaps some prerequisite code as
well.
If you are on a corporate network which may manage updates to Windows, this
may restrict the availability of Windows Defender definitions, as noted in
the troubleshooting article.
