when installing the antispyware update i get a message saying "Windows
Defender requires Windows Installer 3.1 or later....." and then the install
stops. Original version installed perfectly and I've never had this problem
with any other SW. ????

Please go to WindowsUpdate, do an express scan, and install everything
offered. You may need to do this more than once, until nothing new is
offered.

Windows Defender, and a number of other newer software offerings from
Microsoft do require the newer installer, which was made available as a
critical update.

OK, after a song and dance and three or four obstacles I finally got the new
Installer loaded and got the new Defender loaded, but when I try to run the
definitions update I get error 0x8024002b.

I clicked on the support link provided which describes a problem different
than what I am experiencing, so I don;t want to follow those instructions yet
which tell me to deleted the old signature. I don;t want to end up with no
definitions at all!! Any ideas?

I know this is frustrating. Windows Defender updates via autoupdate.
automatically, or manually, via Windows Update.

So--the probable solution for you is to again go to Windows Update, do an
express scan, and apply all offered updates. This will include Windows
Defender definitions, and, additionally, perhaps some prerequisite code as
well.

If you are on a corporate network which may manage updates to Windows, this
may restrict the availability of Windows Defender definitions, as noted in
the troubleshooting article.
