Without the CD/DVD/Installation Media it will be tough to get those games
back. I'm assuming you have Windows XP, so here is some help:

First I'd suggest checking the actual game executable files have been
deleted, and it's not just the shortcuts which are missing from the Start
Menu. The executable files for the games can be found under
C:\WINDOWS\system32\. They will have names as follows:

Hearts - mshearts.exe
Solitaire - sol.exe
Spider Solitaire - spider.exe
Minesweeper - winmine.exe
Freecell - freecell.exe

Games with the "Internet" prefix, if you have them, will be usually located
in C:\Program Files\MSN Gaming Zone\Windows\. Pinball will usually be located
at C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Pinball\PINBALL.EXE.

I'd suggest searching the internet for backups of the executable files if
you don't have them, perhaps they can be found (just be wary of dodgy
software and bad websites).

Otherwise buy Windows again, or borrow a disc from a friend to get the
files. Microsoft provides instructions on installing the games if you do have
a disc at the following URL (Windows XP):

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307768

Best of luck,
RV

1) Ask your friend if he/she can reverse what they did, and while you're at
it ask what else they changed.

2) Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components >
Accessories and Utilities > Games. If unticked, tick and OK your way out. If
ticked, untick then OK out, then go back in, tick, and OK your way out.

3) Sort yourself out a disc now, before you *need* one!

I have a different issue with the internet games. When I start them up I get
a message saying the following: 'Reversi' is unable to start. Close some
other programs and try again, or try reinstalling 'Reversi' using Add/Remove
Programs in Control Panel.

I can't seem to find the correct thing to reinstall in the add/remove
programs. The shortcuts are all there and they haven't disappeared, but
something has.

"I can't seem to find the correct thing to reinstall in the add/remove
programs..." - when you follow the path I detailed in (2) above, do you see
"Games" under "Accessories and Utilities"?

Yes, and after clicking on games I can see that Internet Games: Reversi,
Hearts, Spades, Backgammon and Chess is also there and checked.

Chess? Sure you don't mean Checkers?

Anyway, so you *have* found the correct place. So what happens when you
carry on? To quote myself from the aforementioned step (2):

"If ticked, untick then OK out, then go back in, tick, and OK your way out."

In other words: remove Internet Games, come right out of the Add/Remove,
then go in and add it back in.

In even other words: reinstall it, like the error message you got said.
