I need to know, if possible, how to set windows xp up so
that when Dialog Boxes come up, they always show the files
and folders in Details view and sorted alphabetically

Just to clarify, I need to set the browse boxes default to
view by details and sorted alphabetically.
(ie. Open, Save As, Import, Browse etc.) for all programs.
Such as Office, AutoCAD, Lotus etc.

You can't. There is no such setting (for details). Sort is the system default. It's set by closing a window by clicking X with control held down (don't worry there a million other things that override it for explorer). There is no system default setting for icon style.

Thanks for you reply David,

Ok, I understand that Details cannot be saved as a system
default setting.
But I do not quite understand what you ment by closing a
window with control held down and then X. I understand
these instructions, but it does not seem to do anything.
Could you elaborate a little bit more on what that does?

thanks

Sets the system default sort order. You said "sorted alphabetically". Pretty much only dialogs will use this cause there are many cascading defaults, though on a newly installed XP it would be used (and set to sort alphabetically anyway) globally.
