The default slide master on one of our computers (PowerPoint 2003, Windows
XP) is purple with yellow text. We are trying to get in back to plain,
unformatted white, with black text for the master. HELP, I cant figure out
how to get the change to stick for all new presentations.

Thank you
Pepper

Try this then:

Create a slide as needed and Save As > PowerPoint Template *.pot
name it Blank and save in the default position offered

Thanks, but all I was able to accomplish was to create another "design", a
new presentation still opens with the "default master", which is purple.
Perhaps I am not setting the default master properly - any guidance on that
will be appreciated.
