Is there any risk to keeping the default shares on a newly reimaged XP Pro
workstation and can they be disabled?

When I do a net share from a dos prompt on my pc, here is what shows up.

Share name Resource Remark

----------------------------------------------------------------
D$ D:\ Default share
ADMIN$ C:\WINDOWS Remote Admin
C$ C:\ Default share
IPC$ Remote IPC
The command completed successfully.

Dear carmen,

It's only a risk if you have no (or a very weak) password for any of
the administrator accounts. These shares are mostly harmless and are
meant to be there. To permanently disable them you need to do that via
Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Computer Management / System
Tools - (expand) Shared Folders / Shares and right click then select
"Stop Sharing".

Hope that helps.
