The software provided with my Epson Stylus 760 when installed on Windows 98
includes status monitor software that I do not care for, but it can be
turned off similarly to the way you described.
I found though that on a clean install of Windows XP (version 2002), it
plugged and played the printer and installed only a driver. No status
monitor. Hooray!
