IE 6 has "decided" that the default file type for pictures is bmp and it has
decided not to know the name of the file. That is, find a picture on the
net, right click and "save picture as" results in the file name being
"untitled" and file type as bmp with not choices on the file type. Recently
it would save the file name and save the picture as under what-ever file type
it was.

Where do I find the default that has been set and change it?

The usual fix is to clear your cache.
IE-Tools-Internet Options-Delete Files (in the TIF section)

That seems to work about 98% of the time but if it doesn't, close IE
and reopen and do it again. Also it has been reported that clear
cookies helps, but ensure you save any that you need.

If the above fails, then try here:

Hi rgreene :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Why is Bitmap my only option to save a picture?

Courtesy of Kaylene aka Taurarian:

To empty your Temporary Internet Files cache
1. In Internet Explorer>Tools> Internet Options.
2. On the General tab, click Delete Files, including Offline Files

How to set default image editor for images

Go to control panel>Folder Options>File Types
Scroll down to the image extension, for example .jpg, or .gif
Click on Advanced button>New (to set a new action)
Enter the word Edit in the ‘Edit’ window (top window)
Put the cursor in the ‘Application used to perform action’ window
Click the Browse button
Search the folders to find the .exe in the program you want to use as the
image editor (CorelPP.exe)
Click on it to enter it into the window
Click OK

Do this for all the image types you want to use the editing program for
(.jpeg, .gif, .bmp)

This will add the item ‘Edit’ to the list when you right click on an image,
along with the Open, Print, etc., and other selections.

Then you need only right click on the image you want to edit, click on Edit,
and it will open the image into the editing program ready to edit.

also,,,

To restore the default file association, go to
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
Download, unzip and merge the REG file, "JPE/JPG/JPEG Association Fix"
Some image/graphics programs will change file associations.

Hope this helps :-)
