Default e-mail: chosing Gmail rather than Outlook

I'm running Windows XP, with IE 8. I set up my Internet Tools to select GMail
as my default e-mail program, as it was FINALLY listed in the dropdown.
However this is causing problems whenever I try to send an e-mail from a
webpage or something similar where the PC has to "fetch" the default program.
It always gives me an error message, stating that I've yet to elect an e-mail
program or set one up. I'm then insrtucted to open Outlook and run it, which
is exactly what I didn't want to do, by chosing GMail as my default e-mail
client.

I don't like being forced to use Outlook, but can't get further in many
programs I'm using, without doing just as instructed, and activating Outlook
and keeping it set up and selected as my default e-mail program under
Internet . . Tools . . . Programs.

Can you help? Thanks!!

Do you use outlook at all? If not, uninstall it.
