default browser problem on WinXP

I set Firefox as my default browser. However, whenever I click a
hyper link when no browser is opened, say from my Eudora, it always
opens Firefox with the content, AND opens IE as a blank window. When
Firefox is already open, this problem don't occur. Why?

As a side note, when I click open a local html file, the Windows
always prompt out a warning, saying the file "does not exist" or "path
is broken", while the page opens in a browser. Isn't that funny? ;-)

Thanks.

Click Start, Run and type:

firefox.exe -silent -nosplash -setDefaultBrowser

Press {ENTER}

This is a Firefox problem. I did find a fix, but it ony worked temporarily.

The message normally only appears if Firefox is not already running.

1. [Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs >] Set Program Access and Defaults >
Configuration that's already checked > Browser: Select "Internet Explorer"
here.

If no joy, see:

2a. http://www.oehelp.com/ielnk.aspx

2b. Hyperlinks do not work in Outlook Express after you upgrade to Internet
Explorer 7:

[Ignore the references to OE above]

Well, I got a worse problem now -- I did:
firefox.exe -silent -nosplash -setDefaultBrowser
and set "Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Set Program Access and
Defaults > custom.."

Now whenever I click a hyperlink from within Eudora, after a LONG
pause (>15 seconds), a "die-hard" prompt comes out:

SERVER BUSY
This action cannot be completed because the other programs is busy.
Choose "Switch to" to activate the busy program and correct the
problem.
[ Switch to ] [ Retry ]

-- the only thing I could click is "[switch to]" which leads to
"Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Set Program Access and
Defaults ....", and I have to re-set in the "Default Program" 2-3
times in the control panel before the above prompt could kindly go
away. Any solution to that?

This "die-hard" prompt makes me wonder if microsoft is giving people
hard time for those who don't use IE as default browser
