Can anyone help me change the default value for appointments appearing as
busy to being Free.

The default "Show time as" value for an all-day event is "Free", but for a
timed event is "Busy". It sounds like you are double-clicking on the
calendar in the Month or Week view, which by default produces an all-day
event. Instead, choose a view that has a time scale displayed (like Day).
Double-clicking on a slot in the time scale will produce a "Busy" event
whose duration is one time scale slot. You can also display any calendar
view and click the New button to produce an event whose "Show time as" value
is "Busy".

Thx Brian but that isn't it. I'm using the day view. When I click on an a
time slot or drag an email to my calender it sets the time by default as
busy. I want my default to free and change it to busy if I want.

You can't. Your only choices are what I stated.
