Hi folks,

I use msconfig to disable unwanted resident apps that i don't need running
in the background.

this adds up to a lot of unchecked boxes in the list, often with duplicate
or triplicate entries.

is there any setting or tweak i can use to remove all the un-checked boxes
from the startup tab on MSCONFIG?

Yes there is. Guess you want to know how. So see the below

Uncheck all the unwanted in MSConfig Start Up and hit Apply. Then go to the Tools
Tab and select Registry Editor and then the Launch Button
Navigate to the following key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\Startupreg and delete
those unwanted ones from there by highlighting each entry one at a time and then hit
delete and do it to each one that you want to delete and repeat until done
Also if anything is in the same registry location and in the startupfolder then you
can also delete it from there

MAKE SURE that you hit Apply before leaving the Registry Editor

When you close out completely then select Exit without Restarting.

Just a small note from me. I do not have a single entry in the startupfolder in the
Registry because I selected Disable All in the Start Up Tab in MSConfig. Much faster
boot. Cold Boot to desktop 11 seconds

Just for the record, it used to be most, but it's still many of these
that could have been turned off at the program itself. To do that
now, you would recheck the unchecked boxes, start the programs they
relate to, and find the option or setting that implies it causes the
program to partially start at start-up. Then uncheck that, and at
least by the time of the next boot, it will delete the entry that is
also appearing in msconfig.

I used to try to do it that way, but I can't be bothered anymore.
One advantage is that in some cases unchecking one entry just causes a
new entry to be added soon after. One of the duplicates you refer to.

But it is my impresssion that there are quite a few programs now that
have no way to turn off the item in msconfig, and brute force is the
only way. So I just use it all the time now, bearing in mind that
when I'm in one of those programs maybe I should look for that
setting. Sometimes they are phased obliquely. "Quick startup" is
rather obvious to me. Actually the startup is just as slow, but it's
split into two parts, one at windows startup, where they hope to get
lost among the other startup programs, and one part when you actually
need it.

This might be a good time to mention the other program by Mr. Lin,
StartupMonitor. It asks your permission every time some program wants to
install itself in the startup menu - think atrocities such as QuickTime, Java,
and Adobe. I've found that it greatly minimizes the time one has to fool with
MSCONFIG.
