Hello NG,

I need some help in making a decision on finding the right way for our
future IDE.

I hope that this news group a the right place for this desire.

The current situation:

We are a medium size machine building company. At the moment we are
developing the controls for our machines with Delphi 5. Delphi 5 seems a bit
overage now, and so it is time to think about what to use in the future.
There are three points to be discussed:

a.. continue with D5
b.. upgrade to Delphi 2005
c.. switch to VS.NET
Each point has its pro and contra. Has any of you done a decision like this
lately? If yes, why did you decide for that specific IDE? Are there any
links to the www where this subject is discussed?

If you have a great experience in Delphi it would be easier for you to
switch to Delphi for .NET:

As for me, C# is much more powerful language for .NET development.

Rainer,

Beside a part in C++ is Visual Studio Net based on the dotNet framework and
running programs needs therefore beside a Windows OS as well the Net
framework, what is an addition on that OS as was in past Internet Explorer
an addition to that OS.

Probably is from what I understand from your situation Visual Studio Net
therefore not the best choose.

Therefore I go as well for the advice from gaidar in your special situation.

This is the case. Especially since all the software developers in our
company use Pascal as their programming language.

In my opinion it would be the best to switch consequently to .NET and
thereby use C# as a programming language.

Using Delphi.NET, which AFAIK allows a mixture of Delphi VCL and the .NET
framework introduces the danger that the resulting applications would not be
"Fish" nor "Bird", if you know what I mean.

One of the problems I have is, that I must not only convince my fellow
programmers to do this step, but also my bosses to provide the needed money
for it.

So the major question is: What are the big advantages of .NET in general and
of .NET+C# compared to .NET+Delphi.NET that can convince my bosses AND my
fellow programmers to do this step?

Hi Cor,

thank you for your comments. It helps me to know what others think and have
experienced.
My conclusion at the moment is (who would have expected that ;-) that I will
get me a Delphi 2005 trial, convert a old D5 application to it and see how
things work.

At the moment I tend to move to Delphi 2005 to continue work on existing
project and in parallel start with VS.Net on new (little) project. This will
give me some experience and will help me to make the final decision later.
