Most applications executed on an operating system are executed within a
separate process space. Each process space has a section of protected
memory and a section of public memory. Sometimes an application can change
the address of the memory it is pointing to by performing arithmetic on the
object that holds the memory address. Most likely what is happening in this
case is the application shutdown is trying to write to protected memory
space.
