Decimal pt changes on linked graphs

I have several graphs linked to an Excel spreadsheet. I update the Excel
file twice per month, and then update the graphs by clicking on them. I need
the data in the graph to show 1 position past the decimal pt, which matches
the Excel file format. The problem is, every time I click the graph to
update it, the decimal pt also changes. What am I doing wrong?

On the same graphs, I build the graphs at the beginning of the year for all
12 months. I usually hide the columns in Excel that I do not want displayed
in the graph. This works well. In some cases, I cannot hide the excel
column because there is other data in it. When this is the case, I hide the
data in the powerpt graph by clicking the columns I do not want to see.
Again, my problem is when I update the graphs, it loses the hidden columns
and I have to manually re-hide them. Is there a way around this?

How have you linked the Excel data to the graph? Did you link the data to
the graph datasheet? If so, that's probably not the best way.

You should generally have better luck if you create the graphs in Excel and
then copy the graph, and in PPT, use Edit|Paste Special to get it into PPT.
On the Paste Special dialog box, choose Excel Chart Object and click Paste
Link to create a link to your source Excel file.

Otherwise, check the number format in your PPT MS Graph chart -- does it
specify the number of decimals you want?

I don't know how you can resolve the hidden columns issue. Double-clicking
the column/row hides the data in PPT, but since Excel uses an actual "hide"
option that PPT's graph doesn't have, I don't think there's an easy way
around that. Probably there's some VBA code you could use, but I'd think
linking to the Excel chart as described above would work and be easier to
deal with.

I link the Excel data to the graph datasheet as you guessed.

I have tried to create the graphs in Excel and link the graphs to
Powerpoint, however I had issues with the graph's size changing when I did
updates. Resizing the graphs took me longer than moving fixing the decimal
pt. Is there a trick to linking the graphs that I am missing?

Brian Reilly always swears by putting the charts on their own chart sheet
and then linking from there. Hang on a sec....

Ah, here it is.

That *might* help.

Sorry, I am still having trouble with the sizing thing. In the link Brian
wrote, "Better if you create custom size chart pages in Excel so you don't
have to resize the devils in PPT." I am not sure how to do that.

A step by step example would be really helpful if you have one.
