I'm researching the 0x0000008e STOP error which has been plaguing my system
for a couple of months or so. I'd installed 2 further Corsair 8500 Dominator
1GB RAM modules - I already had 2GB of these installed. One of teh new
modules was immediately found to be faulty by Memtest but the other has
tested as ok when checked on several occasions overnight (eg 17 passes and no
errors).

However, 0x0000008e still occurs at least once daily - usually following a
message that a program or utility has stopped working. These are completely
varied and so I don't suspect the programs themselves. Now I've removed the
other added module and am waiting to see what happens - only tried for a few
hours so far.

Question: when researching this an MS article referred to one of the
attendant errors in the brackets as often being caused by the OS running
without the debug switch. How do I set this to run? I think I have to add
/debug to the end of a line in a file but which line and which file and where
is it?

I'm running Vista 32bit Ultimate with an ASUS P5B Deluxe mobo. I've updated
graphics and sound drivers but this had no effect one way or the other.

Hi Steve,

You would not want to run with /debug enabled. That is not normal operation.
In fact, if there is a boot problem the system may halt due to this switch
and make it exceedingly difficult to regain normal mode.

Have you analyzed any of the memory dumps yet? 0x8E errors are generally
driver related, and frequently they are video drivers.

Thanks for getting back Rick. To be honest I'm not sure how to go about
analysing memory dumps, so any guidance would be gratefully received.
Drivers have always been behind STOP errors I've experienced on my previous
XP machine but I have the latest nVidia 8800GTS WHQL ones installed and
Creative's X-Fi ones, so I'm a bit stumped here if that is still the case.

Hi,

It'd be under C:\Windows\Minidump, and the files will be named
C:\Windows\minidump\minixxxxxx-xx.dmp where xxxxxx-xx is the date and
sequence number of the dump. Send the most recent one.

Hi Steve,

Either you don't have Folder Options set to see hidden and system files, or
you are not creating minidumps when the system crashes, but rather full
memory dumps.

Click start, type "control folders" and hit <enter>. On the view tab, set
the advanced options so that you can see hidden and system files.
Specifically, uncheck the line to "hide protected operating system files"
and select the line to "show hidden files and folders". Then recheck the
Minidump folder.

Click start, type "control system" and hit <enter>. Click the line for
advanced system settings. Click on Startup and Recovery Settings. Towards
the bottom, set the line for writing debugging information to "small memory
dump". Apply/ok your way out. The next time it happens, the minidump should
be created. The kernel memory dump (a memory.dmp file under C:\Windows) will
be far too large to send, and the information necessary to analyze the files
involved should be in the minidump.
