Deassociate a Program

If I open an unassociated file type with a program (such as NotePad) and
forget to deselect the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of
file" tic box, Xp will always try to open these file extensions with the same
program from that point on.

Is there a way to deassociate any program from a file extension as I easily
could with Windows2000?

All I can find is a way to change it to another program, as in this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;307859. I can find
no way of eliminating the association.

Thanks...all the best,

Thanks, but that just allows me to change the association, not delete it.
The Delete button is grayed-out.

What extension is it?

If you are familiar with Regedit, you can remove the incorrect
association and it will probably disappear from File Types
The key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xxx (where .xxx is the extension) is the
key in question.

Exporting a key to a registration file before deleting is a good idea.

Sorry to butt in, but.....
it worked for me (going to the Explorer-Tools-Folder Options-File Types). It
had a button to restore it to default and it did it. Thanks for the
information!!!!
P.S. I am working on Windows XP with SP2
