My 3-year old computer is seriously ill, and might as well be dead at the moment. Following a variety of problems with most of my software, it started crashing and sufering serious errors, mainly from driver clashes (which I don't know how to sort out). I decided to repair Windows XP, but 13 minutes from completion, it informed me, "Procedure entry point GetIUMS could not be located in the dynamic link library MSDART.DLL", and just stopped. I tried to reload twice more, but the result was exactly the same. I tried to boot to an earlier configuration, and other options, but it then demanded the XP disk, which of course then led to the same problem

I don't know whether anyone has any clever ideas on how to deal with this. All I can think of is a reformat - but does the problem of the missing dll arise from my computer, or is the XP disk likely to be defective? If the latter, I don't want to risk a reformat

And are there problems with reformatting XP? The on-line info seems to suggest that nothing can possibly go wrong, so it's not necesary and no help is offered

Would prefer direct email replies as will take up less time on friend's machine which am currently using.

You appear to have a virus on your hard disk which is affecting the installation process

If you have Norton Anti Virus..boot off the CD ROM and do a full scan of the XP System Disk before attempting to continue or repair the installation

Failing that, and if you have a backup of you personal information [Emasil Settings, Documents etc], reformat the harddrive and do a clean installation of Xp.

I would do a total reinstall. Even if you could repair it, it doesn't repair
what you call "a variety of problems with most of my software", only the
system files related to XP.

it could also be a physical defect in the hard disk, a full surface chkdsk
or scan with one of the disk testing tools is also probably in order.
