started crashing and sufering serious errors, mainly from driver clashes
(which I don't know how to sort out). I decided to repair Windows XP, but
13 minutes from completion, it informed me, "Procedure entry point GetIUMS
could not be located in the dynamic link library MSDART.DLL", and just
stopped. I tried to reload twice more, but the result was exactly the
same. I tried to boot to an earlier configuration, and other options, but
it then demanded the XP disk, which of course then led to the same problem.

All I can think of is a reformat - but does the problem of the missing dll
arise from my computer, or is the XP disk likely to be defective? If the
latter, I don't want to risk a reformat.

I would do a total reinstall. Even if you could repair it, it doesn't repair
what you call "a variety of problems with most of my software", only the
system files related to XP.
