Hi Everyone

I have two tired old NT PDC/BDC machines, and have configured two new NT6a machines to take over, ready for Win2k u/g
The old boxes have internal IPs 40 & 50, while the new ones have IPs 251 & 252
All other (Win2k Member-) Servers see the old boxes as NameServers, though I have added the two new ones as NameServers too.
Additionally 251 has been made PDC, with 252, 40 & 50 as BDCs. DNS appears to be replicating ok
I tried (having taken down ALL other servers) killing 40 & 50 as NameServers, and swapping IPs between old & new, but it just doesn't pan out, with some Servers and Clients unable to logon

So, the question is, if I DCPROMO my new, 251, box, will that take over all duties, DNS, NS, Netlogon etc, such that I can simply withdraw the old boxes from the domain, and then give the new boxes the old IPs (40 & 50) so I don't need to change all my Client's NIC DNS settings

Options would be great, if I can't just "go for it" !! :

So If i corectlly undertood Your configuration You have na 4 server
boxes acting as DC's. So If You promote one of thme to Windows 2000
Active Directory domain (which will perform upgrade off Yopur domain to
AD domain working in mixed mode) dcpromo can configura DNS service on
this server for You and Ypu con set on this machine also other
functions, but if You still will be maintain other DC's all of them will
be service users logon events and if they will act as for example DNS
server they will answers to DNS questions too.
So, before You start to upgrading Your network to Windows 2000 AD
servces You have to carefully plan Your network services during the
network upgrade and after them.

You don't mentioned anything about workstations in Your environment -
are there only Windows 2k/XP stations or older too. You have to remember
that older then Windows 2k systems are using name services in different
ways - simply they don't use DNS to locate domain contrrollers, so You
have to set up WINS server or use other method.

I think problem with Your client workstations after shutting down some
of DC's gets from lack of naming servcices in network - for example WINS
Server for this workstations was unavilable and broadcast method fails
for some reasons.

I have 15 Win2k member servers, 2 old NT servers, 2 new NT servers (one of these now as PDC, ready for Win2k u/g)
Domain is still NT, WINS & DNS on all four...
All Client desktops are Win2k, with static IPs...only a few XP Pro laptops, each on DHCP...nothing older than Win2k...

I was hoping the Win2k u/g & DCPROMO on the new PDC would "import" the WINS (etc) functionality from all old servers

Does this clarify? Look forward to advice. :

You need to resolve this before proceeding. What's wrong with leaving
the IPs of the new servers as they are, through the change? Is there
some driving reason why the DNS servers need to be 40 and 50?

When you changed the IP addresses of the servers that are DNS servers,
did you stop and start the DNS service? Did you point the DNS servers
DNS entries at themselves (in the NIC properties)?

I would not do that before you have resolved the problems.

I would take it in several steps. Get the whole network working with
the correct IP addresses. If you need to have the new servers as 40
and 50, make that work first. I would free up the 40 and 50 IP
addresses first, then switch the new machines to the new addresses.
(Probably what you tried before). Find out why the machines that
failed did not work. What were the error messages? Could you ping the
new servers? What did nslookup say? The usual stuff.

You might want to read Microsoft's document on upgrading to
Win2000/AD. I believe that I printed off about 1/2 cm of references
and white papers before I did the upgrade.
